But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ (Eph. 4:7).
COMMON GRACE ARGUMENT:
Q. “Doesn’t Ephesians 4:7
say that ‘unto every one of us is given grace’? Isn’t that therefore a grace
common to all? For it doesn’t say ‘every one of us who is elect …’”

Prof. David J. Engelsma
The “us” of Ephesians 4:7 are “the saints” of Ephesians 1:1
and the chosen and holy of Ephesians 1:4, to whom the book was addressed. Only these “us” are the recipients of the
gift of grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ of Ephesians
4:7. Only the elect and saints are the
recipients of the grace of God, according to Ephesians 1 and 4. Take note that the holy saints of Ephesians 1
are distinguished from “the children of disobedience” in Ephesians 2:2. The truth is that some humans are holy
because they are the chosen, or elect (Ephesians 1), whereas other humans are “children
of disobedience,” that is unholy, because God has not chosen them. (DJE,
